For decades we have based our lives on the conviction that “better” means “more”. Yet, the relentless pursuit of economic growth has led to ecological destruction, social instability and a global health crisis. If growth hurts us so much, why don’t we let go of it?
Tim Jackson contrasts the myth of growth with his vision of a society that is richer rather than poorer: “Developing new myths, better stories and clearer visions is as essential as understanding the dynamics of collapse”, Tim says, “perhaps more so.” That in essence is the task of his recent book Post Growth-Life After Capitalism. “To look beyond the myth of growth. To dare to see beyond capitalism itself. To revisit its most treasured assumptions. To challenge the truths that have both nourished us and damaged us. To lay the foundations for a different way of seeing and a better way of being”.
